Panke joined the Microsoft Board as a nonexecutive director on November 11, 2003. He also serves on the boards of directors of UBS AG, Switzerland; Singapore Airlines Limited; and the supervisory board of Bayer AG.

Panke was with BMW Bayerische Motoren Werke AG beginning in 1982 in a variety of positions and, from May 2002 through August 2006, served as chairman of the board of management. From 1999 to 2002, he served as member of the company's board of management for finance. From 1996 to 1999, Panke was member of the board of management for human resources and information technology.

In his role as chairman and CEO of BMW (U.S.) Holding Corp. from 1993 to 1996 he was responsible for the company's North American activities.
