Kevin graduated from Oxford University with a degree in Physics. He gained a Ph.D. from Imperial College, London, and following post-doc at St. Andrews, he joined AT&T Bell Labs as a research scientist. In 1989, he joined BT to lead research into ultrafast optical processing and transmission. From the mid-1990s, following increased engagement with emerging Internet technologies, he led evaluations and trials of high-speed routers and switches, now part of BT's core networks. More recently, he has been working on high-speed optical transmission, helping to evolve BT's core optics to 100G and beyond. Dr. Smith has authored and co-authored many publications in advanced networking.
